Journey with me into the abyss - an exploration of trust and feminine flow

This idea has been brewing inside of me for many months... The knock at my door for several moon cycles now asking me to step BOLDLY into the unknown, to go against the out-of-balanced male-model thinking I've been programmed to follow and to instead follow my heart - over my fears and INTO THE NEW PARADIGM ECONOMIC MODEL.

I wouldn't listen. 

...And so the Universe was like, "fine then - you choosing this is not the only way"  and it proceeded to kick me out of the security nest and into the Abyss - by way of layoff. 

As you might be able to imagine news like losing my cushy full time corporate job, that I worked at from home (often with a nursling in my arms) while enjoying a livable salary that included paid time off, insurance and holiday vacation time, could easily spiral me and my partner into serious scarcity mode thinking. 

And believe me - we went there...

It took about a month of conversations, fights, love making and meditation to process the news and our related fears before we came to a calm acceptance and trust that everything was going to be alright. 

But how did we come to that conclusion?

I mean we both grew up within the matrix of the "EMPIRE" where a dominant network of subsidised conversations (through advertisements and media streams) constantly teach us that we are LACKING. That we do not have ENOUGH and that the world is SCARY. This network of conversations becomes culture and the culture that is lacking will need to buy more products, will need more protection and will not complain about being a worker under this rule.

However, delivering Aerowynn into this world inspired us both to BE examples of what we believe is possible for her and her life. How could we teach her about her power to manifest her dreams into reality if we were too scared to walk the path ourselves? 

Like many of you, we have studied various schools of thought that support the concept of having the ability to call into being our lives as we design them. For us this means a sustainable life that is harmonious with our highest selves, deepest purpose and pleasure. 

Everything we aspire towards and educate ourselves about within this vein was underscored by our own auspicious romance. Aero's father and I connected only after being a stand for our deepest personal integrity in our past relationships and walking away from people we loved and lives that were stable, but NOT the right fit for our soul's greatest purpose. 

We both jumped into the Abyss.

And then we met... Once we met the magick just flowed. Our daughter was consciously conceived and giving birth to her was an even greater example of how trusting and letting go brings extraordinary results.  

So we've experienced walking into the Abyss before and have found that when you do, the universe HOLDS you. We believe in the Law of Attraction and the power of a bit of faith. 

But when it came to MONEY.... Screeeeeeeeeeeeeech!!!

I still hit resistance to trust my inner voice telling me to let go of the programming that has me act from fear over passion. So I would take careful steps towards the Abyss but never actually jump in. 

But now I've been pushed. 

No more cushy job and regular income. Now just a bit of unemployment money for a small amount of time. 

Well that's not it. During my labor with Aero I felt so extraordinarily supported. I was able to be both my most vulnerable and my most powerful. My team listened to my direction and I birthed with dignity and peace. Between surges I was profoundly present to the fact that not all women are treated with such high regard during their births. And as I climbed my mountain peak I wanted all women to have the opportunity to be fully supported through the GREAT initiation into motherhood. 

 

Through my birthing experience I found my calling. To be a stand for women's empowerment through the love of ourselves, our bodies and by trusting our instincts, intuitions and connections to the cosmos. 

So Court and I know it's going to be all GOOD because this IS MY PATH! And we have the experience to trust that the universe will hold us and support our highest missions. Just like we were held after leaving our old lives that didn't fit and just like we were held during Aero's birth. 

So this BLACK MOON I publicly declare that I will listen to the messages I've been receiving from meditations and my birth journey and step into an advocacy and support role for women. I will do this as a way to financially support myself and my family. I will do this to help grow human consciousness and bring forth a more balanced way of existing on this planet that includes the female model and respects the female energies and experience.

From the Abyss I will report back and let you in on my experiment of shifting my thoughts from scarcity belief to faith, from linear thinking to cyclical thinking, from masculine model to feminine model. I will share how my new business is coming together, what my pitfalls are and what my successes are. With a nursling in my arms and a smartphone in my hands I will use the technology at my fingertips to redefine my version of a workday and explore a different model of being a "working" mom and a "housewife."

I hope this experiment and the posts that come after this help inspire or inform you. They will be raw and real. I think many of us are feeling the immense power of the times. This crucial juncture in human history will require all of us to powerfully SHOW UP. Here are the first steps of my contribution. May they unfold for you in an entertaining and inspiring way!

Liberating Motherhood - Launching September!

Chantal and I are thrilled to introduce Vanessa Olorenshaw's new book Liberating Motherhood - The birth of the Purple Stockings Movement. We believe in the power of manifestation and are certain that we called this awesome book into being! We've been ranting, praying, and doing rain dances for this very book to be written and published for many, many years. Even waaayyyy before I started joining in on the ceremonies Chantal was speaking with anyone who would listen about how motherhood and empowerment around birthing choices and support for breastfeeding were feminist issues.

Olorenshaw has jumped at the perfect moment, the dawn of a fourth-wave mom/boho/sacred-feminine/feminism movement that is really starting to gain momentum worldwide. Perhaps this wave will finally have the distance from the societal context, out of which First Wave Feminism was born, to begin repairing the phenomenon of the Cis woman's capacity to become mothers. Bringing feminism to a needed state where women don't have to act as if they are men to enjoy equity.

This excerpt from an article she wrote for discoversociety.org gives a great intro on the timeliness of this book.

After all, when jobs are being lost to automation; when wealth is accumulating in the 1%; when the workplace increasingly encroaches on family life; and when women remain at higher risk of poverty because they have cared for their families, feminism has to start to ask itself: are we ever going to find creative ways to protect, support and empower women beyond simply pushing for paid employment? We must start to recover some of the intellectual and creative verve of the original women’s movement: we have to return to discussing redistribution of wealth and the fair organisation of labour. The fact is, many mothers remain trapped by the market either as workers or as unwaged carers. We need to find ways to value care, to support carers, and put money into the pockets of those who sustain and nourish the human race. Mothers.

Huge amount of gratitude to Olorenshaw for fulfilling on this cultural need for an upgraded conversation on mothering and feminism and for making our dreams come true!

At birth:
There is an intense body-to- body connection between mother and baby, and when left undisturbed, skin-to-skin, mother and baby respond to each other, soul to soul, as their instinct unfolds: the transfer of information from nerve endings in skin traveling deep into the central nervous system. Raw, naked, wet sensuality, communication between bodies, pulsing vehicles of exchange. Like foreplay, when a gentle lover coaxes sensual responses through touch, flesh on flesh, until commingled bodies become one, a baby on its mother’s belly is primed to search, find and attach to the source - the nipple. The baby, seeing its mother for the first time, but knowing her and familiar with her through smell, touch, and taste. Mother’s nipple smells and tastes like amniotic fluid, and the baby has touched the innermost parts of its mother’s body from the time of conception. The sound of mother’s voice previously muffled through flesh, is now at once familiar and clearly new. Baby is HOME.

There is no need to teach the mother how to nurse her baby. There is no need for the baby to learn to breastfeed. This is HOME. Bringing baby HOME ignites the spontaneous action rooted in the depths of the physiology of our bodies. It is at once physical and energetic. An exchange of love, energy, and sensation so intense it is difficult to truly understand unless you have experienced it. It is the wonder of energy-exchange via flesh. Nursing is part of the inborn mechanism known as a primitive neonatal reflex and is dependent on baby being prone (tummy to tummy) on its mother in order for the reflex to be expressed. Without this time, the instinct is lost, and then, feeding behaviors must be approached cognitively - feeding must now be learned.

Contrast the raw physicality of HOME - the uninterrupted commingling and instinctual bonding - with the routine hospital delivery. Harsh, cold, steel, and lights, gloved hands hand-off to the nurse who puts this new being in a flat, non-conforming warmer, electronic heat replacing the soft warmth of a mother's body heat. Latex clad hands harshly rub the newly born baby with a rough blanket to stimulate and dry off the birth fluids so necessary in body-based communication. Then swaddled tightly, arms bound, impeding baby’s essential freedom of movement – these navigational skills needed to establish the life-giving relationship between mother and baby thwarted.

In the days and months after birth:
When the MotherBaby is unhindered and unseparated during sleep, the baby navigates to the source, often without help. Mom may even be asleep, but baby knows from whence its food comes and can find its way there. Through smell, touch, feeling, sound, warmth, and taste, baby moves purposefully, toward the nipple, and latches without assistance. This inborn ability is essential to survival. This ability is part of a protective mechanism against SIDS. The closeness also ensures entrainment. Entrainment is the crystallizing of autonomic pathways that control breathing and heart rate. Not only does baby’s breathing and heart rate synchronize with its mother’s, but also the neuropathways become hardwired, lessening the chance of apneic episodes. This is HOME– the unseen expression of the connection between mother and baby.

The lineage of supporting women is deep within my DNA. As I child I grew up alongside natural childbirth as my "earth mama" mother (Chantal Molnar - producer of The Milky Way) caught babies for a living. I became a certified doula as a teenager and by my 20's I was assisting my friends' labors and photographing their babies being born. During the birth of my own daughter, I was blown away by the power of my body and the shamanic initiation of the birthing process. I recall feeling profoundly upset that women around the world commonly do not have the support that I did during this vulnerable and powerful time of their lives. This brought to mind that the earth is very similar to a woman in the way that it can be both vulnerable and exceptionally powerful at the same time. Our culture, and many other patriarchal cultures around the world, sadly do not tend to recognize power unless it is the power-over model. I had a very clear calling while in the throws of my waves to work towards upgrading the consciousness and conversation around the mother journey. The sacred feminine called on me to step onto my life's path in a more present way and fully embrace my lineage and the distinct world-view I come from.
